Einladung zu einem Vortrag in englischer Sprache

RüKONTOR (5. Etage), Rüttenscheider Str. 144, 45131 Essen

Every child in England knows the opening lines of Blake`s poem „Milton“ „and did those feet in ancient times“ which is generally regarded as the unofficial national anthem of England. Equally well-known is his poem „The tyger“ which is another household name in the United Kingdom and an indispensable part of Britain`s national literary heritage. William Blake who was born in 1757 and died in 1827 was not only a famous writer, but also an accomplished artist whose works have been exhibited both in Britain and in Germany. Unfortunately and undeservedly his genius was not recognised and appreciated during his lifetime. This changed however at the beginning of the 20th century when it reached its first peak, and this is also the time that Dr. Erle’s lecture will concentrate on.

As both her Christian name and her surname indicate, Dr. Sybille Erle was born and bred in Germany. She studied at the Lomonossov University in Moscow and her academic career took her to a number of Universities in the United Kingdom, where she has lived since 2004. Today she teaches as a senior lecturer at the University of Lincoln. Sybille Erle wrote her PHD thesis on William Blake. It was entitled „From face values to inner visions: Blake`s and Lavarte`s perception of Body and soul“. Since then she has published numerous books and essays on William Blake. Her distinguished academic research into English Literature in general and Blake in particular was acknowledged, when she became a fellow of the „Royal society of arts“. Today she is also member of the Blake Society which is dedicated to keeping the memory of this famous English poet alive. In her talk she will focus on the „Perception of William Blake in Europe“ which is also the title of her latest book.
