This lecture will focus on a theme which is important for our future both in
Germany and Britain and indeed in Europe as a whole: What are the reforms
in our educational system necessary to improve the skills of its workforce,
thus preparing our children and young adults to compete in an increasingly
globalised and knowledge-based economy?
Ryan Shorthouse, the Director of the independent think tank „Bright Blue“, will
outline the reforms the UK Government are undertaking in every stage of the
education system – from childcare to universities – and what more needs to be
done to ensure people from all social backgrounds can thrive in the modern
labour market.

Ryan is the Founder, Director and Chief Executive of Bright Blue. He founded the
organisation in 2010 at the age of 24 and finally became the full-time Director at the
start of 2014. He is an expert on education and social policy and a political
commentator, who regularly appears on national TV and radio, He provides frequent
analysis for national newspapers and magazines and authored ten research papers
designing innovative policies on childcare, welfare, public service reform, higher
education and health. Moreover he has provided regular analysis and policies to
various Ministers and government departments.
Ryan was named ‚One to watch‘ in 2015 by The Observer.
