Trollope is one of the most prolific British authors of the 19th century. Born in 1815, his early life was scarred by the financial difficulties experienced by his father which forced the family to flee England for Belgium to escape creditors. He returned to London as a young man but met with little success in the civil service position his mother had found for him. It was only when he moved to Ireland that his career took off.

It was while in Ireland that he began to write novels. After early failures, he achieved commercial success with his Barchester series of novels, followed up with a series of “political” novels.

His commercial success allowed him in his later works to explore more difficult subjects and these showed a depth of understanding of psychology and in particular the predicament of women in the 19th century whose career was, effectively, making a good marriage.

In his Autobiography, published posthumously, he likened his writing to the work of a craftsman rather than an artist, which led to a critical backlash and caused him to be greatly underrated when compared with other English writers of his era such as Charles Dickens, George Eliot and William M. Thackeray.

The talk will give an overview of Trollope’s life and show how it informed his greatest works which are now coming to be recognised, after years of neglect, for the masterpieces that they are.

Mark completed a Master of Arts degree “With Distinction” in 2000. His specialist area of research was 19th Century English Popular Culture. He is a member of the committee of The Trollope Society, based in London, and is the editor of Trollopiana, the Society’s magazine and of The Trollope Jupiter blog
