Monday, 16th May 2022 at 6:30 pm
Veranstaltungsort: Der kleine Saal (Raum E 11) der Volkshochschule Essen
Downing street in London: This little cul-de-sac in the centre of London is without doubt the most famous street in the United Kingdom. No 10 is the address of the British Prime Minister; his/her next door neighbour in No. 11 is the Chancellor of the Exchequer who might be compared to the German „Finance Minister“.
In his talk our lecturer, Jakob Steffen, will focus on former British Prime ministers, some of whom may be considered as failures, whereas others made an outstanding contribution to the history of their country.
Furthermore he will explore, how the definition of the office has changed through the ages. One of the key questions which has determined the fate of British politics over the centuries will be: What are the qualities which are essential for successful leadership? Why did some Prime Ministers rise to the challenge, why did other inhabitants of No. 10 fail to live up to the expectations of their voters?
To which category might Boris Johnson belong? How will he be remembered in the history books?
We are looking forward to a lively debate.

Prior to the foundation of his company he assisted members of the Federal State of North-Rhine-Westphalia in Düsseldorf. Additionally he is involved in local politics in the city of Wuppertal.
His interests stretch well beyond the political and economic field. Jakob is a keen advocate of European unity and has taken up an honorary post in „Station Natur und Umwelt in Wuppertal“ which is concerned both with the protection of nature and the combat against climate change.
Jakob studied for one semester at the Heriot-Watt university in Edinburgh which is one of the reasons why he has a strong attachment to British history.
