“I had heard of Freemasonry in my late teens and knew nothing about it, but it intrigued me. Then after coming to work in Germany, I came in contact with colleagues who were Masons and naturally tried to find out what it was all about. In mid 1971 I made the decision to go ahead and I was initiated into a British Freemasons’ Lodge (Lodge Niederrhein) in Düsseldorf on 6 March 1972. In June 1982 I became the Master of the Lodge for a second time.
I had dealings with Cairo during the 1980s and as a result became very familiar with Egypt. As a consequence, I spent almost 10 years in Cairo after my retirement. Freemasonry is expressly banned in Egypt by act of parliament, so wishing to be involved with a similar kind of organization I joined Rotary and became a founding member of a German speaking Rotary Club in Cairo, eventually becoming their President, before leaving Cairo to return to Germany in 2009.”
